Drawing Together

Simon asked me to sit on the floor and color with him this morning. There is a small table in one corner of our living room, where I always leave crayons and some paper for easy access whenever inspiration may strike him. Eventually, when we buy a house, I want to set up a whole art studio corner for him, with well-organized and kid-friendly supplies on display.
I grabbed my own sketchbook, got his sketchbook for him since he was in need of new paper, and we sat side by side, coloring. I used his crayons and did a quick drawing of him holding a ball. He told me he was “drawin’ Simon” too. It make me smile to spend this art-making time with my little guy. If you have been reading my blog for a while now, you know how important this is to me.
I have not been very productive today by the typical standards of doing things around the house. However, some days I do more in the hands-on mothering department, and I think that can be just as productive. It certainly is more important to me to interact with my son than to get all of the dishes washed. From day-to-day, the balance shifts. Some days I get more tasks crossed off my list, and other days the list goes entirely out the window in favor of small adventures involving mud or play dough.
When I showed Simon the drawing I did, he proclaimed: “Good draw a me.” I was so glad he approved. More importantly, I think he approved of the fact that we were drawing together.

I love the fact that you have crayons and paper for him whenever his inspiration may strike, that is awesome! I agree, hands-on mothering and quality time together is far more important than dishes, I came across this post today and I would like to share it with you, it shares your philosophy… http://whatsupyournose.wordpress.com/2012/07/20/914/
